"Needless to say after what we reported in last week’s article, we were more than a little disappointed that the Giants showed literally no inclination to change up their basic defensive alignment against the 49ers despite a half season’s worth of ineffectiveness so far this season. And if the definition of insanity is doing the same failed thing over and over hoping for better results, well we have met the enemy and he is us!"
and it's in every facet of this regime. Keep trotting out Gano, same 3 yd passes to Wandale, insist Theo Johnson can catch a ball, Runyan, JMS, van Roten are legit.
"The one good piece of news for the Giants in all this is that the one position that looks solid to special are the WRs, as many as 5 of whom have top 15-20 grades."

Tom Landry invented the 4-3 alignment .
Shane Bowen created the 2-9 Doughnut Defense.
How depressing...............
Actually, slot CB Dru Phillips' snaps were down dramatically for this game (to only 29%) compared to any previous game this season, despite his being healthy and the rest of the secondary banged up.
And there was a corresponding increase in snaps for NYG DLs, reflecting more plays with 3 DLs on the field to counteract the Niners' 39 rushing attempts.
As a BTW, Phillips' drop in snaps is another commentary on the vaunted 2024 draft class.

Probably because SF runs a lot of 21/12 personnel? Well we should count our blessing Bowen didn't still go with a 2-4. Also they were gashing the Giants for long runs, so probably did not have to go 11 as much.
Too bad we don't really have enough DL for a 3 DL either.
Just a couple of comments in passing! First, I am hoping that Thomas has recovered from his reported state of shock! The point being that the Giants themselves in scouring the trade wire for a WR the past few weeks let us know that they themselves would like another WR and the good news in that sense is that it looks, at least at this time, that WR is the one really strong position for the 2026 with the likes of Tyson, Lemon, Tate, and Bellgiving them another option should they want to go that way.
That isn't to say there aren't some other really good prospects out there who would be good value in the top 5-10 area, including Caleb Downs and Arvell Reese of Ohio State, there's just not a lot of them.
Barens: Iowa does have a pretty god SS in Xavier Nwankpa but we don't really see him as a legit prospect for the Giants, at least with either of their top two picks. And regarding Shyster's comment on Phillips; the issue with Phillips has always been that he really only has average at best speed. But because he is an aggressive, physical run defender who can defend the pass we wonder if he wouldn't be a better fit at S.
Lastly, again re Shyster, we did notice some 90s showing up at DE more than usual on Sunday, but our issue is more with the back-7 alignment. In both of the past two weeks, for example, we've been playing teams who were without their top big-threats at WR, but still had a great RB who can kill you. In fact, to stop guys like Saquon and McCaffery you have to at least slow them down before they get up a head of steam. Gosh, you'd think if any team would know that about Saquon in particular it would be the Giants. You have to get people into the backfield becuase if he gets a seam with speed he's gone. Instead we stayed in our basic 'take away the big play' schema and got killed.

Thanks for the response. It's a potentially endless subject of discussion; I'll make three points
1. Again using Phillips' snaps as indicator, there was an adjustment for the run-heavy offenses both weeks. AP had averaged 79% snaps (which means 5 NYG DBs on the field) for the first 6 games. That dropped to 52% in the @ PHI game, and then, as mentioned, 29% vs SF.
2. I read your piece from last week. The alignment you suggested was a 5-1, bringing a DB, presumably the SS Nubin, up next to the one ILB to effectively present a 5-2 front. What did we see against PHI on the first series? Nubin in position to stop Barkley's big run and useless to do so.
3. You mention PHI and SF missing receivers. What has the NYG defense been without in the two games you reference? Holland and Adebo entirely; Flott halfway through the first of those games; Muasau for 3/4 of the second game (on top of McFadden's absence). You want the box flooded to stop the run, thereby putting a premium on one-on-one coverage by a secondary of backups. Hurts threw for four TDs, despite no AJ Brown. Mac Jones had a 135 passer rating. The NYG D, impaired as it was, was not facing one-dimensional offenses.
The basic difference in our viewpoints is that, overall, I'm not impressed with the players Bowen has been given to work with, to begin with, and the injuries have made the recent situation practically impossible.
Dennis-Sutton, DE. There are a lot of tools in that toolbox of his. Classic Penn State edge prospect with a lot of attributes but not great production. See Chop Robinson, Odafe Oweh...
And you can't bank on Cam being 100% for next season, so why not mention Nick Singleton and K-Train Allen?
I don't know if Amare Campbell is going to come back at LB, be he's had a real nice year for the Lions.
In that A&M-Mizzu game, you really needed to mention the A&M receiver KC Concepcion. He's been terrific after transferring in from NC State. And he might be solidifying a day-two spot. And how do you not mention Cashius Howell?? He's having a great year at DE for the Aggies.

I think you need to make up your mind and take a position already.
In the attached memo to the OP, you say "these are not normal times and the Top 10 isn't that good", and then go onto say the QBs, DTs, ERs, and CBs all have issues. Then above in this post you say there are some guys that would have really good value in the Top 10. Which is it?
Maybe let me be of some help...there are more than enough of college prospects in this next draft that will ultimately be very good value in the Top 10. Not suggesting this is some epic draft class but it has sufficient top end talent. Would offer up you just haven't figured out who they are yet. And because you have a penchant to suggest WR at the drop of a hat every year you probably overlook a lot of other positional areas that have high first-round potential to them.
And not for nothing, Caleb Downs is one of the best overall prospects you will find in ANY draft class. Some may not like investing in Safeties, but Downs is a defensive monster that can reshape how a team plays on that side of the ball.
if the Giants drafted Downs, Tyson, Fano, or Delane with their likely top 5 pick, but I'd rather they trade down. They couldn't potentially get a huge haul especially if they're in the top 3 or 4 and the top QBs keep performing well.

I agree. Would have a tough time watching Downs going elsewhere but give me a 4-5 picks for our slot and lets see if we can get some solid hits that make a difference.

Of course we could always go WR instead...haha.
