Why not Gruden

Phils2008 : 11/7/2025 8:53 am
I get the lawsuit crap, but is he blackballed, prohibited from any coaching job? If anybody could fix this mess, it’s him. Either you want a winner or you don't. He brings the same enthusiasm, skill set and winning mentality that Dart brings, so what are the arguments against him?
Not another Gruden thread

My biggest concern
Giantsfan79 : 11/7/2025 9:10 am : link
With college coaches or older out of the league NFL coaches is can they handle the 18 hour work days the job demands?
The only reason people wanty Gruden
blueblood : 11/7/2025 9:13 am : link
is because of the QB school show. Other than that no one would even be talking about him.
He's radioactive
Gary from The East End : Admin : 11/7/2025 9:19 am : link
Nobody is going to hire him as a HC.
Scoffing at the lawsuit is pretty funny

He’s going scorched earth, why on earth would anyone touch him?
Check his record after his SB win, it's awful

don’t get the lawsuit part if you think he’s an option for an NFL owner while that lawsuit is going on.

These owners stick together. Not one of them is even considering him while that lawsuit is hanging over their heads, and he doesn’t seem to have any interest in settling, I dont think its about the money for Gruden it’s about clearing his name and getting to the bottom of who railroaded him and leaked only his emails.

There is zero percent chance any NFL team hires him with that lawsuit still going on, not even worth discussing
He's blackballed
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/7/2025 9:32 am : link
Dude was rascist, you think he's going to walk into a predominately black player league again? He never comes back.
Gruden is finished
logman : 11/7/2025 10:00 am : link
You don't have to like it, but he's never getting another job in the the NFL
Mook on target
JonC : 11/7/2025 10:02 am : link
Forget about Gruden, he clearly created a path that does not include coaching in the NFL anytime soon.
Mook nailed it
The Jake : 11/7/2025 10:07 am : link
it's a pipe dream. Gruden's out.

Flores is, too, for a similar reason.

But the end result is still the same. I keep saying it over and over again - no good coach wants to coach here.

We keep finding ways to disqualify or alienate good coaches, and yet the last four guys we've hired for the vaunted, glorified HC position of the NY Giants are all bums.

Prove me wrong. Show me a great coach who actually wants to be here. I'm waiting.

Ehh, I think a lot of the “no one wants to coach here” stuff is because we haven’t had a team ready to attract a top candidate. Since prime Eli and awesome DL we’ve had nothing but shit. Someone good is going to want to coach Dart, hitting on him is huge.
And how can anyone prove you wrong
UConn4523 : 11/7/2025 10:12 am : link
Weird comment - you have to wait just like the rest of us to see how Daboll plays out. Then we’ll see how wants to coach here.
well, not really
The Jake : 11/7/2025 10:20 am : link
I already know how Daboll is going to play out and I have for quite some time. If you still doubt it, that's on you.

And I already know that none of the top talent coaches in the football universe - the guys who have multiple teams chasing them to be their next HC - would choose this place if they had other options.

The only coaches who choose to be here (since Tom Coughlin) are the ones for whom there are no other HC opportunities in the NFL. Don't you get it? Even though this SHOULD be a great job, it's a shit job because of who you have to work for. You are set up to fail.

The HC of the NY Giants is like a CRO at a SaaS Company. Everyone knows they have an expiration date.
I do get it
UConn4523 : 11/7/2025 10:24 am : link
And if you think the Giants will never attract a top HC for the rest of time there’s no point discussing it.

There may need to be a moratorium on Gruden or Belichick threads.
As said above, it's not the lawsuit
arniefez : 11/7/2025 10:40 am : link
it's the emails. Have you read the emails? How could an owner put him in front of the media as their HC after those emails?

There's a reason Goodell wanted revenge on him and leaked those emails. He wanted him out of the league permanently for what he said about him. Mission accomplished.

Plus Gruden wasn't a very good HC. He's just a name everyone knows because he won a Super Bowl with Dungy's team his first year in Tampa. He coached 10 more years and never won another playoff game.
No chance
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/7/2025 11:24 am : link
Too much baggage and while I think he is a good HC he gets over rated some imv. I understand the value of hiring someone who has won and won big early in Tampa with a loaded D but this is not the right HC for that with this organization imv.
Tom Coughlin has won a playoff game more recently than Jon Gruden.

Belichick for GM

Gruden for HC. Giants would be so awesomely unhinged!
Gruden fits in perfectly at Barstool.
bceagle05 : 11/7/2025 12:18 pm : link
He should just stay there.

His last double-digit win season was 2005.
Probably largely not the case
Coughlin's Icy Stare : 11/7/2025 12:20 pm : link
but if Gruden is still WCO and Tampa 2, offense would be ok, Dart, Nabers and AT can play in any offense, and Skattebo is a good receiver. Our WRs and TEs hands are too garbage for a high volume passing attack. Our CBs and LBs are not Tampa 2, and Dex is the only player on D who can play any D.

The problem is that John Mara may be following a thought process similar to many of these posters, which is "who is a guy who won a bunch that needs work?"

He's a lawyer so even he would know not to hire Gruden, and he probably hates Rex because he was with the Jets. But BB? He may be pining for that one.

Maybe his girlfriend could be GM?

This is why I am convinced it will be Hafley. A BC background may as well be a blood relation.

You're wrong. Just because Mara didn't try or didn't roll out the red and blue carpet for an established HC the last 10 years doesn't mean they won't come here. Also, this isn't 2019. This isn't 2022.

Young talented QB. Young blue chip talent on defense and the stud (injured) WR and a star left tackle. You're high if you think someone wouldn't want to come here and win big in this town. This is as ripe a situation to win in as any in the NFL, albeit with some youthful challenges.

Also, EVERY SINGLE VET HC that has coached under any and all Maras goes out of their way to praise this this franchise and ownership group. At some point we're going to need to acknowledge what every single reputable person says about the Maras and ignore the bullshit.

Just because Mara has hired the wrong people since 2016 doesn't mean the right person doesn't want to come here and coach.
The lawsuit aside, I think he is one of the more
Section331 : 11/7/2025 4:38 pm : link
overrated coaches in recent history. He was decent in his first stint in Oakland, and deserves some credit for Gannon morphing from a journeyman to a legitimate NFL QB, but he won a SB in TB with Dungy's players, and TB fell off shortly after that. His 2nd stint in Oakland didn't go so well either. I'd rather try some other options.

DECENT in his first stint in oakland!?!? The “Dungys players” argument is so silly. It’s so silly no matter who it is when people say well he won with someone elses players. Well why didnt Dungy win with those players if the coach doesn’t matter?

Gruden was excellent in his first stint in Oakland. They got screwed by an awful rule against Pats. Made deep runs otherwise too. Just because they didnt win the super bowl there doesn’t mean his first stint was just “decent”. We’d do cart wheels to have that kind of success these days
Took over an awful
MookGiants : 12:00 am : link
Raiders team in 1998 that went 4-12 in 1997. Went 8-8 his first and second year, 12-4 his 3rd, 10-6 his 4th.

Lost the AFC title game in 2000 to the best defense in NFL history on a crazy long Shannon Sharpe touchdown and then got screwed by the tuck rule in 2001.

Describing his first stint in Oakland as decent means you can’t be objective when it comes to Gruden because if you were you would never describe his first stint in Oakland as decent.

and I’m not advocating for hiring him
MookGiants : 12:03 am : link
he’s never getting an NFL job with that lawsuit hanging over the owners and Goodell’s heads. But at least be fair when assessing his coaching ability. The only thing he didnt accomplish his first stint in oakland is winning the Super Bowl. Obviously that’s the ultimate goal, but if getting to and winning a super bowl is the only thing you can do to elevate from “decent” then there’s very few coaches in the history of the league to be anything more than “decent"
