When and where did this begin? My first time seeing it was on Parcells's 2005 Cowboys staff: Sean Payton was the passing game coordinator and Tony Sparano was the running game coordinator. I don't think anyone held the offensive coordinator title and Google AI says Payton "served as the primary offensive play-caller" that year. Now we're 20 years later and it appears to be all the rage. We're even seeing it on the defensive side, which seems like a much more recent phenomenon.
Was Parcells the originator and Payton and Sparano the first two guinea pigs? Do any of you recall seeing it earlier than that?
