Franchise (or transition) tag for Flott?

Milton : 2/3/2026 9:20 pm
The CB franchise tag is $21.4M, its transition tag is $18M.

Tagging Flott might be the most prudent approach. I'd hate to lose him to free agency, but has he really proven himself worthy of a multi-year commitment? A single year commitment gives the new coaching staff a chance to work with him before making a longer term commitment and it gives the Giants the flexibility to select a CB like Delane or McCoy with the 5th overall pick if worthy or forego the position altogether if that's how the draft plays out when matching BPA to need.

If the Giants let him test the market, there are teams so loaded with cap room that chances are he lands somewhere else. The transition tag assures the Giants the opportunity to match offers and I would expect that any multi-year deal he signs would come with an AAV of at least $18M. But maybe I'm overestimating his market value or what it would take to extend him before March 9th.

What do you think?

for Flott?
LOL

I think not. He's not that important or that good to slap a tag on.
FWIW

Sportrac puts Flott’s Market Value at $9.5M. OTC has him at just under $9M. I can see him getting paid above that, but the tag numbers are way too high.
No to the tag.

Flott's a nice player but yeah, the tag $ is too high.

I don't like the BBI trope of "Too expensive, let him walk." He was a third-round pick and needed some time to develop. He's not that easy to replace.

He's now eligible to get paid his true market value. The Giants shouldn't expect a hometown discount. On the other hand, he shouldn't expect a hometown overpay.
Flott is back up Material

he is ranked by PFF as the 51st best pass coverage corner and 179th vs the run, that lands him 67th overall corner and that is his best output in 4 years, he is ideally your third or 4th best corner on the roster. I don't think PFF is the final say on players performance but I do put a lot of stock into their ratings because they seem to reflect what you see on the field. We as fans are too accustomed to seeing such garbage that we have forgotten what good football looks like.
the offer should be

I would say $33 million for 3 years range no more
Milton what are you smoking?

I like Flott but he’s a low end starter.

The Franchise tag is too steep for him.
Maybe I'm wrong, I hope so!

Flott's young and I think he's viewed as an ascending player, which is another way of saying, unproven but has flashed talent. Defenses across the league always feel like they're short on CB talent the way offenses always feel short on OL talent. Those are two positions where we can we expect to see average talent getting Pro Bowl money in free agency. And maybe I'm just paranoid, but I think this year will be the worst yet when it comes to overpaying. More teams than not are flush with cap space and everyone is in a "win now" mindset.
Flott??

I hear you, it's been a shit show for years. Overpaying mediocre players is not the solution but making him a fair value offer would make sense but I think 6-7 mil per should be max. I don't even agree with Spotrac estimate of 9 mil. I doubt there will be that strong a market for Flott, terrible liability against the run.
Lmao

Are you serious?

A $21 mil franchise tag for Flott?

And I thought you were delusional with your ridiculous trade back with the Rams.

You need to lay off the drugs.
No, to every

My big concern with using the tag on flott is if we can’t get a long term deal for Evan Neal we need to have the tag available for him

He's a decent player but not worth anything near that tag.

A little bit, but it's not about me. Rolling of the eyes is just more appropriate.

I would agree.
Flott always gets hurt

They can probably bring in an upgrade in FA for that tag price.

I think you look to resign Wandale (thin WR FA market) and possibly Elumanor (Traded from the Ravens - why?). I would also like them to bring McFadden back b/c he seems like a fit for what Harbaugh wants and should be moderately priced.
Of course not
Paying Flott $18M - $21M per year is a silly idea.
There's a reason the transition tag has only been used a handful
regulator : 9:03 am : link
of times since the last CBA, and a few of those times it's been rescinded. For most positions, because of the tight spread between franchise and transition tag values, as well as the existence of the non-exclusive franchise tag, it's useless. The TT exposes the player to loss for nothing in return, and sets a pretty high floor for contract negotiations if the team nevertheless wants to bring the player back.

Still, bloggers and creators searching for content during the next few weeks will no doubt push out think-pieces on how "this is the year" the transition tag makes sense for certain middling free agents... and once again they'll go unused (probably by any team).
Flott is ok as a third

CB. He does cover well and has some make up speed. But not worth that kind of money.
