Somehow I managed to miss this one and had to sit through the Dartmouth Commencement speech a year later, which was a big yawn. I will name no names. In the meantime, the part of O'Brien's speech that always cracks me up:
"Dartmouth, you must stand tall
raise your head and feel proud.
Because if Harvard, Yale and Princeton
are your self-involved, vain, name-dropping older brothers,
you are the cool, sexually confident
lacrosse playing younger sibling
who knows how to throw a party
and looks good in a down vest.
Brown, of course, is your lesbian sister
who never leaves her room.
And Penn, Columbia and Cornell --
well frankly who gives a shit."

but the best commencement speech I ever heard (and I heard 40 of them) started with this statement: Look up the words "selfish" and "selfless" in a dictionary. They are one inch apart. Your whole life is lived in that one inch.
He went on to tell two sports-related stories to illustrate the point. The whole speech took maybe five minutes, and I remember almost every word.
