NFT: New England BBI’ers - Largest Snowfall in History

RELICDOA : 2/23/2026 4:30 pm
I’m in Providence, RI and was only 3 in 1978 but listened to stories of the blizzard of ‘78 my entire life. I’ve lived through some pretty major storms in my teens and adulthood. This blizzard has officially passed the blizzard of ‘78 in sheer snowfall totals. Over 32” officially with drifts over 40”. The state is shut down today and they are already cancelling everything tomorrow and potential into Wed.
Hows the rest of the New Englanders and Tri State BBI’ers holding up?!

on the CT shoreline. Just east of New Haven.

Our plow guy just got stuck in the driveway. CMO wants everyone in tomorrow. Everything is peachy.

Mom was at Stonehill in 78. She remembers that vividly to this day.
not too bad here in Northern Dutchess County -

10-12". Really decreases as you go due north from here. Albany hardly got anything. It was worse to the south and east.

Family got 24"+ in Westchester and Brooklyn.

I remember 1978. I was living on the Upper West Side and for days walking the sidewalks with 5 feet of snow piled up on each side of you.

I’m west of NH in Milford and it looks like we lucked out comparatively. 18”-20” I believe.
Not New England, but knee high in Westchester NY

here in northern New Haven county. epic!
Think we got about 16” in Fairfield CT
mfsd : 2/23/2026 5:13 pm : link
sounds a lot worse north and east of New Haven. Still took a ton of work from snowblower and shoveling to clear our driveway/walkwats and that of my in laws.

32” out in Providence is insane!
Middlesex County, suburbs west of Boston

Where are u in northern dutchess? I had an A Frame on 5 acres in stanfordville when I lived in NY. Was a bitch in the winter but also like a winter wonderland. My German shepherd’s absolutely loved it.

I think we have had about a foot, but it's still snowing a bit for the next few hours. But not nearly as much as the last storm. Rhode Island definitely got hit harder

18 inches with 28 inch drifts

Could have been worse like 78's or the 2013 of 36 inches we had

I’m about the same in Trumbull, although I thought I was done with snow removal at 3:30, go in for a work call then the town plow came and left a nice 3/4” of thick crap at the end of my driveway. Just got back in from round 3, cleaning up his little gift to me…

drifts were ridiculous snowblowing my driveway. Everyone is just chucking snow wherever they can.

Stanfordville?! Dang! The population is about 100 there!

I grew up on a farm on Bangall Amenia Road. Was close to the edge of going to Pine Plains schools, but went to Webutuck.
No snow in Tampa...

East of the river checking in. About the same, maybe 12 inches with crazy drifts

we're getting freezing temps AGAIN tonight! This has been the coldest winter since I've lived here (since 2002). It's not unusual to get freezing temps a few nights during the winter, but this year has been rough.

It started in early Nov. (never had that) and we've had freezing temps every month since. We try to protect our tropical and semi tropical plants, but don't know if a lot of them are going to survive this winter.

Haha yup I just got in from re-shoveling the front of my driveway and my in laws across the street. Was warm enough this afternoon for some of it to turn to slush, wanted to move as much as possible before it turns to ice.

My back has had quite enough for the day…

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 2/23/2026 6:10 pm : link
Is it going to warm up & this shit will melt?
18-20 in Upper Westchester

With the wet snow, the plows and cats have been getting stuck all day
In middle Westchester County
M.S. : 2/23/2026 6:53 pm : link
And it’s hard to tell with all the drifts surrounding my home. I stepped into one that was nearly 4 feet deep. I shoveled for 2 hours and my aching lower back tells me we must have had close to 2 feet overall.

We got over a foot of new snow on top of the foot+ still around from earlier storms.

And now the weather forecast is for several more bouts of snow over the next week.

Ugh

Yep, I moved there as an Adult from Ulster County . Lived 1/2 mile from the millbrook winery on ernest road.
Been in AZ/CA for the last 15 yrs
Rockland County
JerrysKids : 2/23/2026 10:06 pm : link
18-24 in depending where you are with the wind patterns. My driveway was above the knee.
Yeah Jerry we got about 18 here in New City
Stu11 : 2/23/2026 10:27 pm : link
Heavy wet stuff what a pain in the ass to shovel. Way tougher than the storm in January. Also the timing sucked with this one with the worst overnight. January it was a lot during the day so we could shovel 4 or 5 inches at a time. Got my son to go out with me last night around 11 to shovel 4 or 5 inches of it at least.
I remember '78 here in Rockland I was 10. Very similar to this year with 2 blizzards about 2-3 weeks apart. We lucked out, my brother's Bar Mitzvah fell the week in between the storms.
We’re right in the middle of it in RI
BillT : 2/23/2026 11:46 pm : link
An unbelievable amount of snow.
I lived in CT in '78 ...
short lease : 3:28 am : link
I remember the pictures of the abandoned cars on the Merritt (Wilbur Cross) parkways right before the tunnel. Ella Grasso (The governor) declared the state a disaster area. We had a week off from school because they they ploughed the snow into the school yards - there was no place to put it to get it out of the way.

Wow, you guys are listing facts and stats that have not been seen in 50 years. Stay safe everyone.
My son lives in Warwick RI
truebluelarry : 6:02 am : link
he told me they set a record with 36.5" which is insane. I remember the Blizzard of '78 I don't recall the exact amount we got in Northern Westchester County but I think it was around 2 feet, school was cancelled for a full week.
I'm in southern Delaware now near the coast we got 18" of heavy wet snow it was a bitch shoveling my driveway. By the way, the snow removal here is a disgrace, the towns have no idea what they are doing.
Ski areas in VT have gotten more many times..
DefenseWins : 6:06 am : link
but yeah 30 is significant.
We got about 26 here in Bridgehampton
Mike in Marin : 9:29 am : link
Insane. It's rare we get a lot of snow compared to further north and west of NYC and now it's happened twice with the 2 big storms this year.
I live a mile away from Macarthur airport on Long Island
Danny Kanell : 9:56 am : link
Macarthur broker their all time record with 29.1 inches so I guess that's what I got. Wild.
