Among a whole host of rule changes they made including:
--FG's from more than 60 yards are worth 4 points
--Teams are not allowed to punt inside the opponents 50 unless its in the last 2 mins of either half
UFL making changes on field goals, punts to boost offense - (
New Window )
I was never so happy the Giants are still in the NFL.
You can't simply ban pushing players forward because you don't like the team that's doing it...
Trust me, the tush push will become just another play as Hurts gets older and get Hurt doing it. No need to legislate it.
Agreed. The players are too close for an official on the field to call a play. If the replay official could throw a flag for procedure penalties in that context I would be fine with that in lieu of banning the tush push.
as I understand defensive players can't push another defensive player from behind into the pile, so why should offensive players be allowed to do so? QB sneak good, QB push bad.

The NFL has stolen a lot of ideas that other leagues implemented first. A 60+ FG being worth 4 points would change a lot of calculations NFL teams currently use.
What if the NFL made the FG
inside the 20 = 1 point
20 to 40 yards = 2 points
40 to 60 yards = 3 points
60+ = 4 points
could add some excitement into the special teams process.
First, your last point is key here. The odds of injury are just too high, and all it will take will be one high profile QB getting their neck broken to ban the rule.
American Gridiron Football is not the same as Rugby. There are specific rules in Rugby to protect players in a scrum. There isn't an equivalent of that in American Football.
Second, I don't understand why a push in the back is any different from a defensive player jumping on someone's back to get elevation to block a FG. In both cases, you get physical assistance from a team mate. And yes, I know players double team block, but blocking and tackling an opposing player are basic parts of football, unlike pushing your team mate.

If I am not wrong, there used to be a penalty for aiding the runner, or something of that nature where the offensive team could not simply push the runner forward. I know that was done away with, which is why the tush push is legal now.
I would be in favor of them bringing back the rule banning aiding the runner instead of singling out the tush push. I hate watching plays where there are two DBs with a ball carrier stopped, and then two linemen come in and just push the pile down the field another 10 yards. Also a pet peeve when every announcer acts like it is the ball carrier "carrying the pile" when they are essentially just along for the ride.
tl:dr - carving out the tush push specifically for banning seems like splitting hairs. Ban any offensive player from pushing ball carriers down the field.
Dumb rule.

What is the tush push? It is a QB sneak where players push from behind. What I find hysterical is all the complaints have to do with the QB sneak and not the push. So, are we hoping the QB sneak gets banned? Forward progress and offsides are the main issues. Those still exist if you just get rid of the pushing.

I don't think you read what I wrote. I'm saying all the complaints are with the sneak, not the pushing.

LOL.
I can't imagine how many times in the last 10-12 years an opposing team would have kicked a 65 yard 4 pointer to beat us
That and the officials either let it go on too long or blow the whistle too quickly.
Remember the fumble they called a non-fumble vs. the Eagles in their second meeting.

The NFL has not been an innovator in football, and fine, stability is warranted. You have to prove it elsewhere first.
Dumb rule.
I would go so far as to make a field goal from more than 60 yards out be only worth 2 points. It is sickening to see a team get the kickoff, move like 15 yards, and then have a mutant kicker get them 3 points. Teams should be motivated to move as much down the field as they can.

So if a team is on the 40 with 3rd and 10, will try to get a first and then kick a 57 yarder, or will they lose 3 yards on purpose to kick the 4 point FG.
Dumb rule.

There are punting rules about this, can't lose yards to put yourself in that position.
I assume they'll do the same for FGs.
